Let us not forget the Dutch "white hat hacker" who demonstrated the ability to turn off uk solar arrays remotely. I suspect ours and others are also vulnerable.
I thought China would wait to "pull on our leash" until we became dependent., but it looks like they might not be that patient.
It was a big concern while I was still working. I will give NERC and the CIP Standards credit, they forced some pretty high end protection where it was needed. I also watched the "that will never happen here" attitude in utility engineering departments, arrogant wankers! They, fought doing the CIP requirements tooth and nail, because they were smarter. Where the hackers have made real inroads is in municipal water and sewer. Their is no NERC to protect them from their own arrogance.
My sense is the US rush to an energy transition may be slowed substantially if/when Mr Trump is elected. Perhaps these companies will wind up worrying more about the fact that the subsidies, which seem to be their life's blood, may slow or stop
It would be a great thing if the IRA subsidies fueling this rush will be pulled back. They're anticipated to cost at least x3 the original estimate up to $1.2T. We'll see what happens in November! But it's telling that even with all of these tax breaks and subsidies still in place, solar companies are still afraid they can't compete (and they're right - China is using its usual playbook to undercut markets while using slave labor and "uneconomic" decisions).
I mean, what do you expect China to do with those children they kidnap from Nepal, make tennis shoes? 🤷
Sneakers too I'm sure!
FYI The Uyghur do not speak Turkish, but a language that belongs to the Turkic family of languagues
Oops! Thank you for the correction!!

Absolutely, thanks for linking that article! I expect that hackers could take down portions of the electric grid with relative ease.

I'm more concerned about China's ability to trigger a "black start" situation.
